A Canadian mom made a rap video to protest transgender rights, and oh my God, just watch

The Canadian province of Alberta is currently considering new guidelines for respecting students with diverse sexual orientations, gender identity, and gender expression.

These guidelines to create more equitable schools have made one Alberta mom so mad, she just had to…rap about it? Without further commentary, here is “Gender Bender” by MH Wiebe.

The lyrics to this piece of political protest art are as follows:

Come on, come on? What’s all the fuss?
Over transgender washrooms we discuss.
Is this really, really, such the issue.
To focus and put our taxes to?
Can we focus rather to educating,
Rather than mere facilitating.
We should stop and calculate the cost,
While teachers jobs take cuts and loss.
Are there six, perhaps, 13 in essence,
Children in Alberta who switch gender pretense.
No, this is not the issue,
To legislate.
Or to pursue.
(pregnant pause)
(singing)
This is just fender bender.
All over sex and gender.
Can we pick another issue.
Then to change our bathrooms for a few.
(rapping)
Listen, listen, to what I say.
The animal kingdom is smarter this way.
The animals, oh, they lead with more guile.
Their offspring keep their gender in the wild.
If we can’t address male and female.
We’ve lost our purpose, in life we fail.
If our children lose their identity,
This will be sad for our future, you see.
My heart goes to the fatherless and abused,
And I guess that’s why we have some confused.
I am concerned, mother of three.
Keep male and female washrooms where our children can PEE!
(singing)
This is just fender bender.
All over sex and gender.
Why make reality skewed.
And create identity confused.
(rapping)
Stand up, stand up, children of grace.
Speak up and take your rightful place.
Mothers and fathers are the backbone of society.
Why would we change legislation over notoriety.
If we change legislation, in a generation,
Will result in anger, pain frustration.
Why would we make life so grey?
Please citizens, let’s seize the day!
(singing)
This is just fender bender.
All over sex and gender.
What about our destiny?
Can we bring stability?
Seize the day, seize the day!
Fathers and mothers begin to pray!
Seize the day, seize the day!
Speak up for children in this way!
Seize the day, seize the day!
Fathers and mothers begin to pray!
Seize the day, seize the day!
Speak up for children in this way!
Seize the day, seize the day!
Fathers and mothers begin to pray!
Seize the day, seize the day!
Speak up for children in this way!
Seize the day!
Seize the day!

We don’t know much about MH Wiebe or her particular brand of social conservative, transphobic hip-hop. The video links to http://familyshouldknow.com/, a website advocating against the proposed guidelines. Weibe also appears at the end of her performance to tell people to visit the site to say no to Bill 10, a separate measure that passed last March mandating gay-straight alliance clubs in any Alberta school where students request them.

But Alberta appears to be moving on with its guidelines nonetheless. Policies from school districts based on the provincial guidelines are due by the end of the month.

That said, Weibe’s song doesn’t make a lot of sense. There are probably more than six to 13 transgender students in Alberta (population 4.1 million), and they are probably not all “fatherless and abused.” And not all animals “keep their gender in the wild” or “lead with more guile” (whatever that means). But left on its own, the video probably does more to help LGBT rights in Alberta than a dozen Pride parades. So enjoy it, for what it is, and seize the day.
