A Twitter employee found out he'd been laid off because he couldn't access his email

At least one of the 336 people Twitter laid off this morning found out rather abruptly.

Bart Teeuwisse, a Senior Software Engineer who’d worked for Twitter since 2011, announced via a tweet that he’d been laid off. What’s more, he found out when he wasn’t able to access his company email account:

Asked about the matter on Twitter, Teeuwise said he’d also received a call that went to voicemail, and that the situation was a function of working from home.

The screenshot Teeuwise posted also shows an email from the software management service Github that reads “You have been removed from Twitter, Inc.”

On Tuesday morning Twitter announced it was laying off 336 people, mostly from their engineering team. In the memo announcing the layoffs, newly reappointed CEO and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey said that the company would let go of its fired employees “with the utmost respect for each and every person.” He also wrote that “Twitter will go to great lengths to take care of each individual by providing generous exit packages and help finding a new job.”
