Alabama Senate Candidate Roy Moore Has Some Thoughts About 'Homosexual Conduct'

Former Alabama Supreme Court chief justice and current Senate candidate Roy Moore, who might be better known for his commitment to blocking same-sex marriage after it was legalized by the Supreme Court, said in 2005 interview that he thought “homosexual conduct should be illegal.”

Moore appeared on the CSPAN2 show, hosted by Bill Press, to promote his book So Help Me God — a book described in its Amazon product information as “compelling case that the state must acknowledge the moral principles on which America was founded.”

In one section of the book that Press quoted, Moore wrote, “homosexual conduct is and has been considered abhorrent, amoral, detestable, a crime against nature, a violation of the laws of nature and nature’s God upon which the nation and our laws are predicated.”

Moore, whose nightmare-inducing smirk remained painted on throughout the interview, seemed to get a kick out of hearing the passage repeated. Responding to Press’ question on whether he thinks homosexuality should still be illegal, Moore said, “homosexuality was illegal in many of the states across this until the United States Supreme Court in Lawrence v. Texas said otherwise.”

Press sensed Moore was dodging the question — so he asked him again, outright, “I think it’s a yes or no, do you think that homosexuality or homosexual conduct should be illegal today?”

Moore answered, “homosexual conduct should be illegal, yes.”

Being the intolerant prick that he is, Moore was apparently unsatisfied with merely suggesting “homosexual conduct” should be illegal because later in the interview he compared it to beasitality. Really. Behold this exchange, as reported by CNN:

“Just because it’s done behind closed doors, it can still be prohibited by state law. Do you know that bestiality, the relationship between man and beast is prohibited in every state?” Moore asked.

“Did I ask you about having sex with a cow?” Press responded.

“No you didn’t,” Moore said.

“Or a horse, or a dog?” Press asked.

“It’s the same thing,” Moore said.

CNN also noted the former chief justice’s repeated appearances on a conservative radio show hosted by a pastor who believes homosexuality should be punished with death.

While Moore’s comments are habitual and altogether unsurprising, it’s truly terrifying that he’s currently leading polls in the Republican runoff race to replace another bigot, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, in the senate. So a man who believes that homosexuality and bestiality are “the same thing” might be a U.S. Senator.
