CBS Fires Executive Who Said 'Repugs' Murdered in Las Vegas Didn't Deserve Sympathy

A vice president in business affairs at CBS has been fired after sharing her astoundingly insensitive take on the 59 people who were killed in Las Vegas on Sunday. Hayley Geftman-Gold, senior legal counsel at CBS’s office in New York, wrote on a Facebook thread that the victims were probably “Republican gun toters” who didn’t deserve sympathy.

After Geftman-Gold’s post was discovered by The Daily Caller, a website started by Fox News host Tucker Carlson, her comments went viral in Conservative spheres with a predictable “so much for tolerant Liberals” bent.

People who died in Las Vegas, Geftman-Gold wrote, were likely “Repugs” because country music fans are often gun-toting members of the GOP — and their presumed allegiance to the Republican party, according to her, meant she couldn’t “even be sympathetic.”

Geftman-Gold also wrote in the now-deleted post that Republicans would never “do the right thing” since they failed to act after “children were murdered” at Sandy Hook.

A CBS spokesperson confirmed on Monday afternoon that Geftman-Gold had been terminated from the company. “This individual, who was with us for approximately one year, violated the standards of our company and is no longer an employee of CBS,” the statement read. “Her views as expressed on social media are deeply unacceptable to all of us at CBS.”

In an apology released on Monday night, Geftman-Gold described her post has “indefensible” and expressed “sincere regret” for her shameful comments, per Fox News.

“I am deeply sorry for diminishing the significance of every life affected by Stephen Paddock’s terrorism last night and for the pain my words have inflicted on the loved ones of the victims,” Geftman-Gold wrote. “My shameful comments do not reflect the beliefs of my former employer, colleagues, family, and friends. Nor do they reflect my actual beliefs — this senseless violence warrants the deepest empathy.”

Paddock, the suspected gunman, died of a self-indlincted gunshot wound. Authorities found 17 firearms, including a hand gun and AR-15-style assault rifles, inside his hotel room that overlooked the Route 91 Harvest Festival where he massacred 59 people.
