How #MeToo Is Taking the Movement Against Sexual Harassment From Social Media to the Streets

After the wave of sexual assault allegations against powerful men in media and politics over the past month, the #MeToo movement has made the powerful leap from social media to the streets. But where does that leave the traditionally marginalized communities of color who created #MeToo as a safe space for themselves more than a decade ago?

“History tells us that our voices, the voices of women of color, are most often left out of mainstream conversations,” said Tarana Burke, founder of the ‘Me Too’ campaign. “So I’m not surprised that people weren’t paying attention to this until there was white women, right white women from Hollywood who were the focal point.”
