If you still don’t understand sexual consent, this analogy might finally clear things up
It’s hard to believe that even after the intense coverage of the conviction and sentencing of former Stanford student Brock Turner, people still don’t grasp the concept of sexual consent. For those of us who do get it, rape couldn’t possibly be clearer, yet myths like “no means yes” persist. The situation is enough to make you throw your hands in the air and give up—that is, until you remember how important it is that everyone understand consent.
If you’re tired of trying to explain why it’s so important to get a partner’s approval before sex, Nafisa Ahmed has got you covered. The 22-year-old took to Twitter on Tuesday afternoon to express her frustration with people who remain mystified by the meaning of rape, and to provide a simple yet effective analogy for why exactly it’s so wrong.
Easy, right?
I’ve written extensively here about sexual consent—particularly how men learned about it, or if they ever formally learned about it at all. Back in June, I spoke to 48 men—and of them, more than three quarters said they’d never even heard the word “consent” before college. It was upsetting, but not at all surprising.
After the statement read aloud in court by Brock Turner’s victim went viral, consent once again entered mainstream conversation. But a statement from Turner’s own father, written pre-sentencing, showed exactly why we can’t stop educating people, and young men, in particular. The elder Turner called his son’s potential sentence “a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life.”
Most of us understand it’s not okay to steal money. It’s time rapists recognize they aren’t allowed to steal another person’s dignity, either.
