Lindsay Lohan gifted us with epic Brexit tweets, and then deleted them mysteriously

On Thursday night, the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. It was a decision that shocked the world, including some who thought their Leave vote wouldn’t actually count, and roiled the global financial markets. It leaves us with a dim vision of the future of England and Europe, and is likely to negatively impact us here in the United States. As Fusion’s Felix Salmon wrote, “the world of hope, the world of ever-closer union among countries which for centuries would kill each other by the millions—came to a shattering end on Thursday.”

Those grieving the end of the European Union as we know it were joined by an unlikely ally: American actor and would-be pop star Lindsay Lohan, who spent Thursday night tweeting with distress about the then-unthinkable prospect of Brexit.

She’s since deleted the tweets, but not before users nabbed screenshots of her impassioned statements:

As Vox points out, Lohan has been surprisingly political before. Last year, she post on Instagram about the death of Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah. And her interest in the Brexit is reasonable, as she now lives in London.

Lohan’s tweets included jabs at Boris Johnson, the pro-Brexit former mayor of London who will quite possibly become the UK’s next Prime Minister. They invoked the late Margaret Thatcher, a perhaps misguided allusion. They threw shade at Trump, Obama, the Daily Mail and Sarah Palin. They were a work of art, and by Friday morning they were gone.

But not before they gave a much-needed breath of fresh air to those watching Twitter for news on the Brexit.

Now, all we have are traces of the epic tweet storm. Just one Remain retweet is left in the LiLo’s newly apolitical timeline.

On Instagram, at least, we have one vestige of Lohan’s Brexit rants.

The post appears to be part ad for Chanel (“#besmart pay attention and work hard to buy @chanelofficial”) part anti-Brexit, anti-Palin rant “#remain where’s Sunderland? Does Sarah Palin live there? Lol.” The accompanying black and white video starts with a close up shot of what appears to be a Chanel bag, and then zooms out to show a man (presumably LiLo’s beau Egor Tarabasov,) and a woman’s messy blond bun, and then swerves to show a television showing early Brexit results. On the TV screen, we see that “Clackmannanshire votes to remain.”

A man with a British accent jokes, “About half the British population is about to find out about… new places.” There’s laughter and we hear… “fucking existed.” He means that the Brexit will teach those more cosmopolitan Brits, like LiLo’s fellow Londonites, about the small towns like Clackmannanshire and Sunderland that see an exit from the EU as a road to prosperity.

The video was shot when results were still coming in, and LiLo and her pals seem like they were having a good time—drinking champagne, talking Chanel, wondering where the fuck Sunderland is, and probably believing that those small towns they were just learning about couldn’t possibly force Britain out of the EU. Maybe Lohan left it up to remind her of better times. Maybe she meant for it to be a lesson that hubris is dangerous and inequality disastrous, or that xenophobia should be taken seriously, everywhere. Or maybe she just didn’t want to lose that sweet Chanel money. The world may never know.
