Man who said Black Lives Matter defaced his car arrested for hoax

A man who claimed that his truck was vandalized by supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement has been arrested after police determined that he vandalized the truck himself.

Scott Lattin, a resident of Whitney, TX who had emblazoned his vehicle with pro-police messages, made headlines around the world after pictures of his car spray-painted with “Black Lives Matter” on it circulated. Conservative media had a field day. A GoFundMe account (since removed) raised thousands of dollars from people so that Lattin could repair the truck.

Yet, when police checked the story out, they found some major holes in it. For one thing, Lattin appeared to have further damaged his own vehicle after he first reported the vandalism.

“We had initial video when the officers took the report and then when we saw your story on Channel 4,” Whitney’s police chief told local station Fox4. When we looked at those two videos, there were some differences in those and that led us to take the investigation into a different direction.” Police concluded that Lattin had tagged the truck himself.

Lattin told local news reporters that he stood by his initial story.
