People are flocking to the alleged site of a gruesome murder to take selfies: the Avery Salvage Yard in Manitowoc County, Wisc.

We were tipped off to this by Monica Davey, the New York Times‘ Midwest Bureau Chief who more than 10 years ago first wrote about the case of Steve Avery, a recent parolee charged in the murder of 25-year-old Teresa Halbach; her article inspired the Netflix documentary Making A Murderer.

In Friday’s paper, Davey returns to the scene of the crime, finding that, “in downtown Manitowoc, the county seat, the talkative, curious people I had come upon a decade earlier were no longer surprised—or the least bit pleased—to see yet another reporter.”

Among the least happy is Dolores Avery, Steve’s mother, who’s had to fans of the show swarming near her doorstep to take selfies with the Avery Salvage Yard sign.

I went to Instagram to see if this was true. Davey wasn’t lying. There are dozens:

“All the renewed talk, the calls for interviews from around the world? ‘I’m too old for this,'” Dolores Avery told the Times. ‘It’s too much.'”
