Poll: Support for legalizing weed has doubled in the last 20 years

Americans have become increasingly supportive of legal marijuana use, a new poll finds.

Gallup reports that 58% of Americans say marijuana should be legal in the United States. This level of support marks a 38% increase since 2005, and it’s more than twice the level of support reported in 1995, when only 25% of Americans supported legal marijuana use.

This increase of support was noted across all age groups surveyed, but younger adults (ages 18–34) were the most supportive; 71% of that demographic said that they were in favor of legalizing marijuana.

Marijuana has been legalized in four states (Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and Colorado) and decriminalized to varying degrees in many others.
