Starbucks just killed their lines with its app

If you hate waiting in line, and maybe don’t like your coffee too hot, does Starbucks have a feature for you: The coffee roaster announced Tuesday that it is making mobile ordering from its smartphone app available at most of its stores nationwide.

Here’s how it works:

  • Opening the app shows a a map view highlighting where advanced ordering is available
  • Once you choose the store, a menu appears that will allow you to choose your order
  • The app will then show the estimated timeframe the order will be ready

It seems to work: The feature was first tested in Portland this past December, then was expanded to Pacific Northwest locations this spring. This summer it went to 3,400 stores, and will now be available in 7,400 company-owned stores.

“The fact that [mobile ordering] also represents the fastest technology application rollout we have ever done is indicative of the strength of our digital ecosystem, how well it has been received by both our customers and store partners and the impact we think it can have on the future of retail,” Adam Brotman, the company’s chief digital officer, said in a release.

Starbucks claims the orders are “freshly prepared and ready for pick-up in the bar area.”

So it’s on you to make sure it doesn’t get cold.
