Tom Ford refuses to dress Melania Trump—but not for good reasons

Well now, Tom Ford has thrown his hat into the ring, telling our good friends on The View that he had already declined to dress Melania Trump. No, not for the inauguration. He apparently turned her down years ago, before Donald Trump was even considering a presidential run. “She’s not necessarily my image,” he said, probably thinking he’s being shadier than he actually is.

But Melania wasn’t the only one to suffer the wrath of the apparently passive aggressive designer. He went onto discuss how regardless of political leanings, women in power should not wear expensive fashion, because we wouldn’t want the sheeple grazing the aisles of Kohl’s to start dreaming of bigger things, would we?

“And the first lady — other than the fact that I’m a Democrat and voted for Hillary [Clinton] and [am] very sad and disappointed that she’s not in office — even had Hillary won, she shouldn’t be wearing my clothes,” Ford said. “They’re too expensive. And I don’t mean this in a bad way … [she needs] to relate to everybody.”

Even nearly a month after the woman lost the election, these men are still out here telling Hillary Clinton that she needs to be relatable. But Ford didn’t mean it in a bad way! (Sure.) Interestingly enough, when Joy Behar brought up that he had dressed Michelle Obama when she had dinner with the Queen, he said, “I thought that was appropriate and I was honored.” Maybe Hilfiger thought it was best that fashion people don’t take a stand about dressing Melania because they just have no idea what they’re talking about.
