Trump surrogates create #BasketOfDeplorables meme with alt right heroes. Ok, sure!

Donald Trump and his surrogates went on the offensive on Twitter on Saturday following Hillary Clinton’s comments that half of his supporters belong in a “basket of deplorables.”

Trump, somewhat subdued for him, only tweeted about Clinton’s comments three times on Saturday.

Trump also gave some major shade by retweeting President Obama in 2012, who had written that he would be a president for everyone, not just half the country. While respectable shade, it’s worth noting that Clinton said it was half of Trump’s supporters, which doesn’t constitute half the nation. Trump received 13.3 million votes in the Republican primaries, so half of his supporters would be just over 6 million people. There are 300 million people in the U.S.

Other members of the Republican establishment denounced Clinton’s comments.

And then there were the out-there responses from some people out of the mainstream. First up, former Ku Klux Klan head David Duke, who Trump has semi-tried to distance himself from, tweeted this on Saturday night:

Roger Stone, a former advisor to Trump, tweeted The Expendables poster, re-imaged with some of the maligned people of the alt right. Donald Trump Jr. posted it on Instagram.

This photo includes several heroes of the alt right: Milo Yiannopoulos, InfoWars’ Alex Jones and the Pepe the Frog meme. Sure, ok, at least Hulk Hogan didn’t make an appearance, like in Duke’s photo.

Tee shirts with Basket of Deplorables also began selling.

To be fair, Democrats have been known to pounce on similar Republican gaffes (anyone remember “binders full of women”?). But it seems a bit odd that Trump surrogates would be allying themselves with the alt-right, when Clinton gave one of her most lauded speeches of the campaign just two weeks ago … denouncing the alt right faction of the Republican party.
