White folks tried to steal #GrowingUpBlack’s thunder, but Black Twitter wasn’t having it

The denizens of Black Twitter are rallying around the hashtag #GrowingUpBlack in celebration of the little things that seemingly every black kid experienced with their parents. It seemed as if we all shared memories of being slathered in Vaseline, dodging much deserved spankings, and sitting through countless episodes of television courtroom shows.

Unsurprisingly, it only took a few hours for a handful of white folks to make the push for #GrowingUpWhite, a derivative hashtag meant to tap into the nostalgic fun as well. While some of the tweets were lighthearted takes on growing up in white households, other used the hashtag as a chance to take potshots at black people.

Rather than just calling out people using #GrowingUpWhite for being unoriginal and occasionally racist, Black Twitter took control of the hashtag and turned it into what can only be described as a giant, open-handed clapback.

The moral of the story? Don’t come for Black Twitter. It will come right back at you with a fistful of receipts.
