Explainer: How E-Verify Works

E-Verify is a government program that checks whether employees are legally eligible to work or not. And if Congress passes an immigration reform bill this year, it could be mandatory across the country.

Clarification: Employers are not specifically obligated to terminate an employee whose work authorization is not confirmed by E-Verify. If an employee receives a final non-confirmation of work authorization, the employer has the option to terminate the employee without violating any civil or criminal laws.
