Here are all the responses to Trump's idiotic comments about 'punishing' women for abortions

Latest

Donald Trump has once again proved that electing him president could result in a nightmarish landscape for women in America.

During an interview set to air Wednesday night, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews asked the Republican frontrunner: If abortion is outlawed, should women who undergo abortions be punished?

Trump, who was formerly pro-choice but changed his mind in the last few years, responded: “There has to be some form of punishment.”

When pressed what that punishment would look like, Trump didn’t have a clear-cut answer, telling Matthews that he has “not determined what the punishment would be.”

Within minutes of the interview’s release, however, his misogynistic comments sparked a firestorm of negative reactions on Twitter—from both sides of the aisle.

Hillary Clinton also chimed in:

As did Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards:

Even John Kasich, fellow pro-life Republican presidential hopeful, felt Trump went too far.

Some suggested Trump’s statement was so crazy he was actively trying to lose the nomination:

Others pointed out the harsh reality that, when abortions are illegal, women are already punished by having to undergo unsafe and often life-threatening procedures:

In a statement, Ilyse Hogue, the president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, argued that Trump’s remarks are dangerous to women everywhere.

Donald Trump hit a new low today in not only towing the anti-choice line that abortion should be outlawed but in proposing that women who seek abortion care should be punished. Not only is this an unhinged position far from where the American people are, but it is sure to endanger women were he to become president.”

Hogue added, “Everywhere abortion is illegal, the number of abortions don’t go down. But the number of injuries and deaths go up.”

Even the pro-life group March For Life responded by saying that Trump was “out of touch with the pro-life movement” by advocating for punishment. “No pro-lifer would ever want to punish a woman who has chosen abortion,” said Jeanne Mancini, president of March For Life Education and Defense Fund, in a statement.

So when Donald Trump says he wants to make America Great Again, one must ask herself: For whom? Certainly not people with vaginas.
