Here's Trump Praising a Man's Dead Dad and Then Finding Out He's Alive

President Trump signed orders on Thursday afternoon authorizing new tariffs on much of the world’s imported steel and aluminum—a measure that has Republicans, captains of industry, and many countries very mad.

But during the (dry, scripted) ceremony, the president went rogue, calling on the ceremonially gathered metalworkers around him to say something. That’s when Trump (rhetorically) killed one man’s father.


“Your father, Herman, is looking down on you and he’s very proud,” Trump told one man.

“Oh, he’s still alive,” the man replied.

“Oh, is he? Then he’s even more proud of you,” Trump replied, like the fast-thinking social chameleon he is.
