Poll: Record number of Americans hold 'very favorable' view of NRA

Despite wanting stricter laws concerning the sale of firearms, Americans have an overall favorable opinion about the National Rifle Association, an organization that is staunchly opposed to gun control.

A recent Gallup poll found that 58% of Americans have a favorable opinion of the NRA and that only 35% hold an unfavorable view of the lobbying group. Gallup also found that 26% of respondents have a “very favorable” opinion on the NRA—a record high in the 26 years that the question has been asked.

The poll was conducted about a week after the recent Umpqua Community College shooting in Roseburg, Ore., which left nine people dead, not including the shooter, and many others wounded.

U.S. Pres. Barack Obama addressed the shooting in a speech Oct. 1, the night of the tragic event. He asked “America’s gun owners” to “think about whether your views are being properly represented by the organization that suggests it is speaking for you,” which The New York Times interpreted as a “veiled swipe” at the NRA.
