Sarah Huckabee Sanders Insists It's Super Normal That People Are Dying to Leave the White House

As yet another senior Trump administration staffer heads for the door—this time, top economic adviser Gary Cohn—White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders insisted on Wednesday that everything is super normal in the White House.

Asked by ABC News’ Cecilia Vega during the daily press briefing why so many staffers are leaving—nearly half of the top-level staff has turned over since the Trump presidency began—Sanders said: “Look, this administration has had a historic first year, we’re going to continue doing great things. This is an intense place…It’s not abnormal that you would have people come and go.”

When Vega pushed back on Sanders’ claim that it’s actually very normal to have a record number of senior staff jumping ship in just the first year—with a total of 35 departures so far, according to CNN—the White House spokeswoman quickly corrected her: “I said it’s not abnormal to have turnover.” Oh, OK then.

Vega pushed Sanders again, asking, “If this is not the definition of chaotic, how would you describe what’s happening?”

Sanders responded in her characteristically clipped way:

If it was, then I don’t think we’d be able to accomplish everything we’ve done. The economy is stronger than it’s been in ages, ISIS is on the run, the remaking of the judiciary, jobs are coming in at record numbers, there are historic things that have taken place in the first year. Sounds like a very functioning place of business to me.

There you have it. This White House is OPEN for business, which means it’s also open for hirings—by the boatload, according to the president!—and lots of resignations under murky circumstances. You know, normal small-time business things.
