The Smiths are on Twitter: What will their first tweet be?
The Smiths, seminal ’80s post-punk band (can you already tell I’m a white dude?) and companions to a particular breed of lonely high schoolers, have joined Twitter. Sort of.
The newly established account, which has about 3,700 followers as of this writing, is saddled with the clunky handle @Smiths_Official and comes complete with a verified check mark—despite the fact that the band broke up back in 1987. Stereogum points out that the account is operated by Warner Music, which owns the Smiths’ catalog, and that the account could “have something to do with marketing old Smiths records, or maybe Smiths reissues, if there are any of those coming.”
This is by far the most exciting Smiths-related Twitter news since 2014, when the band’s ornery former lead singer Morrissey briefly appeared to have started using the service. That account was quickly revealed to be a fake by Morrissey himself, who said:
“I gather that a Twitter account has been opened in my name – as ‘It’s Morrissey’ – but it is NOT Morrissey. I do not know who has opened this recent Twitter account, but please be aware that it is bogus. That’s, of course, if you should remotely care.”
The new account hasn’t tweeted yet, which raises the question: What will its first tweet be?
Please, Please, Please Let Me Tweet What I Want?
Stop Me If You Think That You’ve Read This Tweet Before?
Retweeters of the World Unite?
Last Night I Dream That Somebody Faved Me?
Just kidding, it’ll probably be an explicit statement of the subtext of every tweet: Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now.
