Why this old man eating a hamburger has the internet in tears

Early Wednesday evening, Northeastern State University student Kelsey Harmon tweeted perhaps the saddest photo in the medium’s existence:

dinner with papaw tonight…❤️ he made 12 burgers for all 6 grandkids and I’m the only one who showed. love him pic.twitter.com/0z0DkPtUiR

The photo clearly evoked a shared feeling of deep sadness and empathy for one’s own parents or grandparents, and as such, papaw’s sad face has reached full-blown meme status. As is custom, “papaw” has produced some creative responses. Here are some papaw tweets:
