With New 4-Part Anti-Trump Series, The LA Times Editorial Board Is Officially Woke
The Los Angeles Times editorial board just eviscerated Donald Trump—the man and the president—and it’s only their first of a four-part editorial series scheduled to run through Wednesday.
In a Sunday editorial titled, “Our Dishonest President,” the Times called Trump a “narcissist and demagogue,” and said nothing had prepared the newspaper’s editorial board for “the magnitude of this train wreck.” Worse, it noted we still have 1,400 more days of this madness, assuming Trump actually finishes his term.
Trump’s policies so far seem to be anti-everything except rich, white men and corporations (and, of course, anything Russian), and the newspaper warned that the consequences would “rip families apart” and “foul rivers and pollute the air,” among other things. And that was the least harsh section of the editorial.
According to The LA Times:
What is most worrisome about Trump is Trump himself. He is a man so unpredictable, so reckless, so petulant, so full of blind self-regard, so untethered to reality that it is impossible to know where his presidency will lead or how much damage he will do to our nation. His obsession with his own fame, wealth and success, his determination to vanquish enemies real and imagined, his craving for adulation—these traits were, of course, at the very heart of his scorched-earth outsider campaign; indeed, some of them helped get him elected. But in a real presidency in which he wields unimaginable power, they are nothing short of disastrous.
Despite all of this, the Times remains convinced that the U.S.’ rule of law, systems of checks and balances, and democratic institutions will ultimately prevail, as it survived Andrew Jackson, Richard Nixon, and slavery.
Over the next four days, the Times editorial board says it will address “three troubling traits”: Trump’s “shocking lack of respect,” his “utter lack of regard for truth,” and his “scary willingness to repeat alt-right conspiracy theories.”
Grab the popcorn, this is going to be good.
