Four flightless birds went on a flight from the law in Texas yesterday
Four emus escaped their owner’s backyard in Round Rock, Texas yesterday and made a run for it.
The emus—named Emmitt, Huey, Dewey, and Louie—managed to escape sometime before 2 p.m. local time Thursday, when CBS News reports police were informed of their flight for freedom. Cruelly, since emus can’t fly, that flight was really more of a jog.

The emus’ owner, Lori Kessler, told CBS she wasn’t sure how her feathered buds escaped from her backyard, which is fenced in, “but did note the gate to the backyard was open when she got home from work.” I’m not a detective, but I bet those emus walked right out that gate.
The police and animal control had a little trouble safely catching the emus, but they did manage to capture some video while in hot pursuit of the gawky Australian birds:
Yesterday Kessler told CBS that “the only thing they can do is try to herd the animals back.” As of last night, ABC News was reporting that the emus hadn’t been caught yet, though police had “set up roadblocks to contain the animals, which they say can be dangerous.”
But this afternoon Round Rock police announced on Twitter that the emus had been “safely contained”:
Emmitt, Huey, Dewey, and Louie are on their way back to Kessler’s backyard, but we can only hope they’ll roam free again soon. You can’t keep a good bird down. Unless it’s flightless.
