Donald Trump just pledged to donate negative $518 million to "women's health issues"

Donald Trump says he would debate Bernie Sanders for $10 million and donate the money to “various groups involved with women’s health issues.”

OK.

“I’d love to debate Bernie. He’s a dream,” Trump said during a press conference in North Dakota on Friday. “So what we’ll do is, maybe, if we can raise for women’s health issues—or something.”

One group that may need the money, at least if Trump wins the presidency, is Planned Parenthood. Because Trump has pledged to defund the organization.

“I’m totally against abortion having to do with Planned Parenthood, but millions and millions of women, cervical cancer, breast cancer, are helped by Planned Parenthood,” Trump said during a Republican primary debate in February.

“So you can say whatever you want, but they have millions of women going through Planned Parenthood that are helped greatly. And I wouldn’t fund it. I would defund it because of the abortion factor, which they say is 3%. I don’t know what percentage it is. They say it’s 3%. But I would defund it, because I’m pro-life. But millions of women are helped by Planned Parenthood.”

OK.

Defunding Planned Parenthood isn’t as straightforward as canceling a check. A majority of the federal funding Planned Parenthood receives—like 75% of the $528 million it received in 2014, according to the organization—comes from Medicaid reimbursements. Planned Parenthood provides health care to low-income patients, and the government reimburses those expenses.

So to recap: Trump would hypothetically donate $10 million to unnamed groups that work on “women’s health issues.” Then he would, as president, try to deny 50 times that amount to the most prominent women’s health care provider in the country.

Which means, according to my quick calculations, Trump just effectively pledged to donate negative $518 million to improve women’s access to health care.

Thanks.
