Machete-wielding man wounds two Belgian police officers in apparent terrorist attack

A machete-wielding man injured two police officers in a Belgian suburb before being shot and killed by police on Saturday, authorities said.

The Belgian Prime Minister told broadcaster RTL the attack appeared to be terrorism.

Police in Charleroi tweeted that the attacker shouted “Allahu Akhbar!” (God is great!) before pulling the machete out of a gym bag and coming at the officers near the Hotel de Charleroi. The area was temporarily closed off after the attack.

According to Belgian newspaper Le Soir, police believe the attacker acted alone. Police in Charleroi posted on Twitter that the two officers were “out of danger.”

Tensions are high in Belgium after three coordinated terrorist attacks in March killed over 30 people at the Brussels airport and the Maelbeek train station. ISIS claimed responsiblity for the attacks, which came just days after an ISIS cell was raided in Brussels in connection to the November 2015 terrorist attack in Paris. In July, 85 people were killed and more than 200 wounded when a man plowed his car into a Bastille Day celebration in Nice, France, in an attack that ISIS later claimed responsibility.
