61% of Trump supporters think Obama wasn't born in the U.S.
Have you ever wondered what the people who think that Donald Trump should be president think about other stuff? Here’s a little insight based on a survey of 572 likely Republican voters conducted by Public Policy Polling (PPP), a Democratic polling firm:
- 61% percent of Trump’s supporters think President Obama, who was born in the United States, was not born in the United States.
- 66% think President Obama, who is Christian, is Muslim.
- 63% want to amend the Constitution to eliminate birthright citizenship. (Compare that to a 2011 Pew Research Center poll that found 58% of the general public want the Constitution to stay the way it is.)
These views—divorced as the first two are from reality and as extreme as the last one is on immigration—aren’t too far out of step with what the poll found overall. PPP reported that 51% of likely GOP voters surveyed said they want to eliminate birthright citizenship, 54% think Obama is Muslim, and 44% believe he was not born in the U.S. (On that last point, 26% said they weren’t sure where Obama was born.)
