Trump Will Reportedly Announce His Decision to End DACA Next Week

After waiting a week to mull over whether he will end President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, Trump has officially decided: DACA is no longer.

Poltico first reported Trump’s decision, which followed a week of reports suggesting he would end the program granting work permits to some 800,000 undocumented immigrants who were brought to America as children. White House aides reportedly met on Sunday to discuss containing the assured political shitstorm his announcement will ignite. Of course, Trump’s base will be happy to hear he has resolved to follow through with one of his campaign promises.

Trump is expected to announce his decision on Tuesday, and the White House informed House Speaker Paul Ryan of the president’s decision on Sunday morning, according to a source close to the administration. Ryan had said during a radio interview on Friday that he didn’t think the president should terminate DACA, and that Congress should act on the issue.

Being that he’s an extra understanding guy, Trump will apparently postpone enforcement of the new policy by six months — Politco framed the delay as an opportunity for congress to introduce legislation that would protect DACA since it was originally instituted as an executive order.

Whether or not congress will actually act, given that it hasn’t already, remains up in the air. Bipartisan support for DACA suggests that a solution is possible: several Republican lawmakers like Senator Orrin Hatch and Senator Marco Rubio encouraged Trump to keep DACA. But given the GOP’s blind allegiance to Trump’s commands, it’s also possible they stall and do absolutely nothing.
