We asked 12 young Republicans about the GOP field — here's how many support Trump
Just before the second GOP Presidential debate began, a focus group of young Republicans put together for Fusion by the California-based research firm Davis Research was asked who their preferred candidate was. All but two said they were leaning toward Donald Trump.
The focus group, divided equally between men and women ages 18-34, split evenly on their support for Trump, with five men and five women supporting him and one man and one woman declining to do so. The two people who did not support Trump both said that they were leaning toward supporting Ben Carson.
Pollster Kristen Soltis Anderson, who conducted the focus group with Fusion’s Alicia Menendez, says that in previous research she has analyzed, Republican women tended to favor Carson while men favored Trump.
Participants told Menendez that they liked that Trump spoke his mind and was not politically correct. One of the two participants who supported Carson said that he didn’t believe the country needed a reality TV star as President of the United States.
Despite their support for Trump, many members of the group disagreed with his stance on immigration reform with almost all of the participants supporting a path to citizenship for undocumented people in the United States.
Members of the focus group were gathered from all over the Los Angeles area by Davis Research, which contacted prospective respondents randomly and cast a diverse sampling of young voters.
