Gay football player Michael Sam performs song about dad who won't accept son

Michael Sam made history last year when he publicly announced he was gay ahead of the NFL draft. And he made us cry last night on Dancing with the stars.

Sam, the first openly LGBT player to be drafted in any major American sport, centered his performance around his father not accepting him for being gay.

“When I first came out it was all over the press. What people don’t know is it cost me my relationship with my father,” Sam admitted on the show.

Sam performed to an emotional song about a son not “being the son he dreamed of.” The song is titled “Not My Father’s Son” from the Broadway musical Kinky Boots.

Despite the moving performance, Sam didn’t make the cut and was eliminated for the show Monday night.

“It was bittersweet,” Sam said today on Good Morning America. “That was my best performance but we did get eliminated but I have no regrets.”
