After the D.C. blizzard, only women showed up to work in the Senate

Washington, D.C. was not paradise to most over the weekend when it was pummeled with over two feet of snow. As the East Coast sluggishly trudged through the snow after the storm ended, a funny thing happened at the Capitol building: the men stayed home and the women showed up to work.

According to the Washington Post, Lisa Murkowski, a Republican Senator from Alaska, was one of the few members of Congress in the building on Tuesday. She was present “to handle the formalities of delaying Senate business until her colleagues could get back to work” and then noticed something different: no dudes.


“As we convene this morning, you look around the chamber, the presiding officer is female. All of our parliamentarians are female. Our floor managers are female. All of our pages are female.”

Murkowski went on to say that she and Susan Collins, a Republican Senator from Maine who brandished the chamber’s gavel, had not planned the all-women Senate, but she wasn’t exactly surprised. “Perhaps it speaks to the hardiness of women,” she added, “that put on your boots and put your hat on and get out and slog through the mess that’s out there.”

On Tuesday, two women who are used to snow went to work and shamed the male members of the legislative body of the United States. Perhaps the American public will reward their “hardiness” by voting more women into the overwhelmingly male institution.
