All Hail Cardi B, Our New, History-Making Pop Queen
Cardi B is the hottest female rapper out right now and she just proved that when her single,“Bodak Yellow,” reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 on Monday, dethroning Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” in one of the biggest and most symbolic chart wars in recent memory.
If you didn’t know already, Cardi B has been battling Swift for that number one spot for the past three weeks now. Cardi B has showed nothing but love for Swift, even posting a video of herself singing along to “LWYMMD.” However, Swift discounted her song in a move that some people saw as a ploy to stay on top. But not even that could stop the Bronx rapper from claiming what was rightfully hers.
More importantly, though, Cardi B’s achievement is a true milestone moment. It’s been a shocking 19 years since the last time a female solo rap artist—that would be Lauryn Hill for 1998’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)”—has reached the top spot. She’s only the fifth female rapper to ever have a no. 1 hit. ANDDDDDDD she’s the only woman of color, besides Rihanna, to have a number one hit this entire decade. Which is insane.
