Poll: Disapproval of Supreme Court at record high three months after same-sex marriage ruling
A new poll shows that, in the three months since the Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage’s constitutionality, disapproval for the court has reached an all-time high.
Gallup reports that 50% of Americans disapprove of the job the Supreme Court is doing, 45% approve, and 5% have no opinion. The court’s disapproval rating has never been greater in the 15 years Gallup has been tracking it, but analyst Justin McCarthy notes that, statistically speaking, these numbers are essentially the same as they’ve been for the past three years.

The polling organization ties the disapproval high to an overall erosion of trust in the branches of U.S. government. But it’s hard not to connect the ratings with the Supreme Court’s same-sex marriage ruling in June. Only 55% of Americans favor allowing same-sex couples to marry, according to a Pew Research Center survey taken in July, and, like…name five other Supreme Court rulings from the past six months! It’s OK. I’ll wait.
