Sarah Huckabee Sanders Is So Close to Getting It

On Tuesday, reporters continued to ask White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders to defend Donald Trump’s “shithole” comments, and their implicit racism.

Here’s Sanders’ full answer (emphasis mine):

Look, I think that is an outrageous claim, and frankly, I think if the critics of the president were who he said he was, why did NBC give him a show for a decade on TV? Why did Chuck Schumer and all of his colleagues come and beg Donald Trump for money? If they are who they want to try to portray him as, why did they want to be with him for years and years in various activities, whether it was events and fundraisers and other things? I think it’s just an outrageous and ludicrous excuse, and they need to get on board and start actually doing what they were elected to do.

While this answer is a classic example of whataboutism, she actually raises some great points. Many of us were actually asking these things about Donald Trump long before he ran for president! I can remember idly flipping through channels at various points in the mid-2000s and wondering, “Why is this jackass on TV?

Why, indeed, would a major network television station give such a lofty platform to a rich, racist man? Why would politicians ask a rich, racist man for money? Could it be possible that Democrats can be racist, too? Could it be possible that network television doesn’t have the most stellar track record on racial progress? Could it be that politics and media both have long-festering problems with racism? Could this whole court be out of order???

Why would America make Donald Trump so successful if he were racist? Could it be that the structures of American business, culture, and politics all have a tendency to elevate the type of people Americans claim to abhor? Could it be that Donald Trump exists at the nexus of the very worst traits of those three sectors of American life?

If true, that fact might condemn large swathes of Americans. It might mean the entire existence of the United States is inextricable from its racism and history of exploitation! Wait a minute…

Sarah Huckabee Sanders is so close to getting it. She’s like a freshman at Brooklyn College telling her professor, “But by that logic, the entire system is immoral!” Indeed…

Sarah: This can be your blue pill/red pill moment, if you choose to accept it. There’s hope for everyone. Come toward the light, and take this dogeared copy of A People’s History of the United States.
