Trump Insists He's Doing Great in Puerto Rico, Which He Definitely Knows Is an Island

Despite San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz’s emotional insistence that Puerto Rico is in the midst of a “humanitarian crisis,” President Donald Trump on Tuesday insisted that everybody says he’s doing an extremely great job responding to the island’s increasingly dire situation. He also definitely knows that Puerto Rico is an island in the middle of the ocean—a “fun fact” he totally did not just learn about this morning.

Responding to a question about the assets he plans to deploy to Puerto Rico, Trump responded (emphasis mine):

We have had tremendous reviews from government officials—as we have in Texas and Louisiana and as we have in Florida, as you know, from governor Scott, Gregg Abbot, great governors—and this morning the governor [of Puerto Rico] made incredible statements about how well we’re doing.

We understand it’s a disaster, it’s a disaster that just happened. The grid was in bad shape before the storm. And Puetro Rico didn’t get hit by one hurricane—it got hit by two hurricanes, and they were among the biggest we’ve ever seen. With the second one being even worse. The second one hit Puerto Rico as a category 5. I don’t believe anybody’s ever seen that happen before. Hit land with that kind of velocity.

The governor has been extremely generous—and I appreciate it. We, right now, have our top people from FEMA, and they have been there. We are unloading on an hourly basis massive loads of water and food and supplies for Puerto Rico.

And this isn’t like Florida where we can go right up the spine, or like Texas where we can go right down the middle and we can distribute. This is a thing called the Atlantic Ocean. This is tough stuff.

The governor has been so incredible in his statements about the job we’re doing. We’re doing a great job.

The president is clearly aware that Puerto Rico is absolutely an island situated in a large body of water, though he does not appear to have heard of something called a “plane” that can “fly” over an “ocean” to get to “land” and help “people” who are “in dire need.” I’m sure Puerto Ricans feel better already.
