Befeathered Kim, smiling Kanye, and a cartwheeling 70-year-old on the CFDA Awards red carpet

The 2015 CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Awards were held last night at New York’s Lincoln Center, and everybody and their mother was there — including North West’s.

Yes, Kim Kardashian West strode the red carpet in a Proenza Schouler midi-length sheer “naked dress” laced with grommets and microfibers, a textured look which hardly concealed Kim’s growing pregnancy and heralded her new approach to maternity wear the second time around. Looks like it’s going to be pretty hardcore.

Wondering why Kim was in attendance at last night’s event — which honors outstanding work in American fashion? She was presenting the founder of Instagram (a company which I hope she has shares in) with the Media Award.

Obviously Kanye West accompanied his wife on the red carpet, but I feel like he finally understands his role as Kim K’s husband: to stand silently behind her at any given time — almost lurking — and appearing completely dazzled by the outfit he most likely picked out.

Another couple who matched almost seamlessly? Last night’s Fashion Icon award winner, Pharrell Williams, and his wife, Helen Lasichnah, who upended the dress code entirely (in the very best way possible), dressed like the cool-ass East Village (moneyed) punks.

Then the “angry Pharrell” (Kanye’s words, not mine!) and the real, all zen’d-out Pharrell exchanged laughs on the red carpet, flanked by their terribly beautiful wives.

Speaking of terribly beautiful wives of crooners, Chrissy Teigen (who is married to John Legend) was there, in a white strapless Solace London gown that boasted a sculptural flutter detail that really worked. It was subtle, modern, but still “very LA” (she is very much so the latter) — that is, until Teigen ripped the middle slit 5 inches too high… The aspiring chef joined a heap of her supermodel sistren, all of whom looked amazing: from Joan Smalls in a white plunging gown to Gigi Hadid in a shiny, Las Vegas-ready gilded jumpsuit.

Karlie Kloss and Hilary Rhoda played it safe in ho-hum floor-length gowns, but thank goodness for Hanny Gaby Odiele who donned nothing but leather hot shorts (a style that was all over the bums of my fellow Greenpoint, Brooklyn neighbors this warm weekend) and a sheer tunic.

Odiele’s Hot Topic goth vibes continued with Alexander Wang and his muse, Anna Ewers, who skewed more “Knights of the Watch” in a chain mail mini.

And yes, there were several designers in attendance, seeing as it was their night to shine. But how could they, with Betsey Johnson, 72, the recipient of the night’s Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, cartwheeling onto the red carpet and landing in a damn split?

They still tried, though — and to much success. Menswear Designer of the Year, Tom Ford flirted with ’70s Burt Reynolds flair in his rose-colored aviators; Victoria Beckham in a sleek 2015 version of the essentially the same look she’s been pulling off since 1996; and Womenwear Design of the Year winners, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen,  in ultra-minimalist oversized culottes and flight jackets from their The Row collection.

Mama CFDA herself, Diane von Furstenberg, was ever the inspiring style doyenne in her own printed design and signature tousle of waves, joining Betsey Johnson in septuagenarian slayage.

As to be expected, the affair was also filled with a number of Hollywood starlets who regularly get photographed wearing the designs the night was celebrating.

“Cookie-ask-about-me-Lyons” (Taraji P. Henson) strolled up in custom crimson Vera Wang that, while not necessarily adventurous, certainly fit her like a glove. The daring was reserved for red carpet genius, Diane Kruger, who was fresh off her glamorous show-stopping turn at the Cannes Film Festival, she shimmering in red hot paillettes. Then there was the ever-rambunctious Juliette Lewis, who accompanied designer Cristian Siriano in a white feathered ball gown skirt and crop top of his making, and promptly grabbed a slice once the evening rounded to a close, because wouldn’t we all?!

Katie Holmes (sans rumored beau, Jamie Foxx) had an easy, “girl down the Creek” beauty about her that was reminiscent of Joey Potter: A toss of brown locks and an emerald Ralph Lauren column. Girls’ Jemima Kirke was all concept, shape, and arm pit hair in a coral two-piece from Rosie Assoulin. Ever the Brooklyn girl, on- and off-screen. Vogue‘s June cover girl Amanda Seyfried could have done more to bring this intricately crafted Rodarte dress to life. Maybe, I don’t know, a ponytail? It was wonderful to see a post-Spring Breakers Vanessa Hudgens: she’s growing up and seriously convincing as a Broadway actress.

The night got much of its cool from the R&B chanteuses in the building, though: From a royal and majestic Janelle Monae in a signature embroidered cape from Tadashi Shoji, to a darkly athleisure-clad Tinashe, who looked like a baby FKA twigs. Jhene Aiko’s fire-engine red Thakoon dress clashed beautifully with her cornrows, while Grimes’ maroon Proenza Schouler frock, with its cut outs, off-the-shoulder detailing, and hole-y stockings, had a punked-out Mad Max feel to it.

And to complete the evening? Instagram star Fat Jewish trolling the event with a bottle of “White Girl Rosé.” I’ve never had the pleasure of tasting the brew, but it sounds like the perfect drink for summer.
