Donald Trump's private jet has been flying around illegally for months

One of Donald Trump’s most frequently used private jets is not currently approved for air travel and hasn’t been for some time now.

According to a new report from the New York Times, Trump’s Cessna 750 plane hasn’t been sanctioned to fly since January 31st, when its FAA registration lapsed. That means that for the past two and a half months, Donald Trump has been flying around the country in violation of federal aviation law.

The maximum criminal penalty for flying an unregistered aircraft is $250,000 and up to three years in jail, though the Times suggests that the chances the FAA would actually seek such a penalty is slim. The cost to renew the aircraft’s registration is a whopping $5.

News of Trump’s registration fail could mean that the plane is grounded for days or even months while things get sorted out,.

Trump does have other, aircrafts he can use in the meantime. But, knowing Trump, it’s hard to imagine he’ll want to adjust his travel plans. The Trump campaign has yet to comment on the issue.

Correction: An earlier version of this story claimed that it was Trump’s Boeing 757 and not his Cessna 750 that was not registered.  Trump’s Boeing plane is currently registered.
