Legendary Mexican singer Juan Gabriel dead at 66

Mexican singer and songwriter Juan Gabriel has died, his family confirmed on Sunday. He was 66.

Gabriel reportedly suffered a heart attack.

Gabriel was currently giving a U.S. tour, and had a show scheduled Sunday in El Paso. He performed for the final time Friday night in Los Angeles.

Born Alberto Aguilera Valadez in Michoacán, Mexico, on a street that has since been renamed Juan Gabriel Street. He began his career singing at nightclubs and on television with the stage name Adán Luna.

Gabriel began recording in the 1970s. His 1984 album “Recuerdos II” has sold 8 million copies, making it the best-selling Mexican album of all time.

Gabriel recorded 15 albums with over 1,000 songs. He’s sold over 100 million records in his career. He recorded across many genres, including love ballads, bouncy mariachi tunes, and pop, rock and disco songs.

Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto expressed his sorrow over the death on Twitter.

There was an outpouring of grief over Gabriel’s death.
