As President Obama continues his historic tour of Cuba this week, he’s getting a little help from 17-year-old daughter Malia in the language department.
White House photographer Pete Souza posted a photo on Instagram of the president and Malia at a restaurant in Cuba talking to a man and laughing. “The President and Malia share a laugh as Malia translates Spanish to English for her dad at a restaurant in Old Havana,” Souza wrote in his post.
“You know, her Spanish is much better than mine,” Obama told ABC News. “And I’m hoping that she has a chance to get entirely fluent.”
“My vocabulary is the equivalent of a 2-year-old’s,” he said. “It’s one of those things I’ve always said to myself that I’m gonna take care of. But … it turned out that, during the presidency, I didn’t have time to take Spanish lessons.”
Malia and her sister Sasha are traveling in Cuba and Argentina with their parents over spring break.
