Allegedly, the man became so engrossed in the game that he neglected to show up for work or pay much attention to his wife, prompting his spouse to divorce him. Convinced that the three-week-long binge was caused by the game’s addictiveness, the man filed a lawsuit against Bethesda, the studio that develops the shooter.
“If I knew that this game could have become so addictive, I would have become a lot more wary of it,” the man said in a statement. “I would not have bought it, or I would have left it until I was on holiday or until the New Year holidays.”
The man’s reportedly asking for some 500,000 roubles ($7,000) for his trouble. As odd as the entire story may seem to people unfamiliar with Fallout 4, there’s some precedent for the game consuming inordinate amounts of peoples’ attention.
As Venturebeat points out, Pornhub reported that its overall web traffic plummeted by 10% the day that Fallout 4 dropped. If this game can pull thousands of men away from their joysticks, it stands to reason that maybe, just maybe, it could cause them to neglect the most basic responsibilities of adult life.
