Tesla owners are sharing their AutoPilot fails on YouTube

Look, following instructions is boring—especially when you have a fancy toy car that has recently learned to drive itself!

This week, Tesla rolled out its new Autopilot software and already videos are surfacing on YouTube of Tesla self-driving fails. The company warned drivers that the system is still technically in beta and drivers need to keep their hands on the wheel, but apparently the temptation to drive hands-free is just too great.

In the first video below, after a San Francisco driver finishes telling his friend how much he trusts the Autopilot system, at about the 2:50 mark, the car nearly sends him flying off the road when it makes a sudden turn.

Meanwhile, in Miami, this Tesla driver decided to test out auto-pilot while driving in the rain. His Tesla suddenly swerves on a curve, leaving the driver rattled (though he keeps filming the whole thing with his smartphone, even after he’s taken back control of the wheel):

And in this one, the scariest one, the car suddenly veers to the side of the road, crossing the double-yellow road divider line right into the path of another car:

Meanwhile, this driver blamed AutoPilot for going 75 mph in a 60 mph zone, causing him to get a ticket. We’re ready to blame our beta toys for everything!

It’s a little terrifying that people are beta-testing on open highways. We may be well on our way to a driverless society, but for now at least, it’s a safer bet to keep your hands on the wheel. And if you see a Tesla S on the road with you, give it a wide berth.
