This English town will burn an effigy of David Cameron with a pig tonight
It’s Guy Fawkes Day in England today, which means that all over the country, bonfires will be lit to commemorate a foiled plot to blow up parliament more than four hundred years ago. One English town is adding to that tradition this year with plans to burn a giant effigy of U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron, mostly naked, with a pig:
The effigy is a reference to #baeofpigs, a controversy that erupted earlier this year after a former friend and colleague of Cameron’s published a book, Call Me Dave, alleging that the Prime Minister had been intimate with a dead pig at a college party. The authors, Lord Michael Ashcroft and journalist Isabel Oakeshott, alleged that there were accounts of Cameron having “inserted a private part of his anatomy into the animal’s mouth.” The description of the whole incident, which has not been verified, is eerily similar to a plot line on the TV show Black Mirror.
Lewes, in southern England, takes Bonfire Night pretty seriously every year. There were other dignitaries headed for the bonfire as well tonight, including former FIFA President Sepp Blatter, who resigned earlier this year after a corruption scandal.
The Blatter effigy was actually a popular one in other parts of England too, it looks like.
