Andra Day's inspirational new song 'Rise Up' just makes you feel better
Rough day today. There is great capacity for evil and misery in the world, and there’s absolutely nothing that can save us from difficulty, heartache and misery. But we have to continue. And sometimes nothing can help us feel exactly what we need to feel quite like music.
I don’t know what you need to feel today. But everything I need to feel today is hidden within Andra Day’s single, “Rise Up.”
“You’re broken down and tired/ Of living life on a merry-go-round,” Day starts this song of perseverance and capability, and she goes on to sing about overcoming the moments in life that seem impossible to forget.
Her voice is somber, filled with a history, reminiscent of women like Billie Holiday and Amy Winehouse, who sang through the pain, who brought us art that taught us not only how to feel but how to survive.
In the chorus she sings:
“All we need, all we need is hope
And for that we have each other
And for that we have each other
We will rise
We will rise”
Let’s rise like the day. Let’s rise up. In spite of the ache. Because, as Day sings we will have to “rise a thousands times again.”
Andra Day‘s debut album Cheers to the Fall comes out on Friday.
