Canadian political candidate: 'I didn't know what Auschwitz was’

Two days ago, a website called the Truth North Times dug up an old Facebook comment from Alex Johnstone, a Canadian politician running to represent Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas. The comment was on a photo of Auschwitz, the Nazi concentration camp, from 2008, posted by Johnstone’s friend.

The (sic’ed) comment reads: “Ahh, the infamous Pollish, phallic, hydro posts… of course you took pictures of this! It expresses the how the curve is normal, natural, and healthy right!”

Oh boy!

Aside from the gibberish, Johnstone is apparently making a dick joke about Auschwitz. How is she going to get out of this one? Well, get ready, because you’re about to witness a real master class in PR damage control.

First, Johnstone posted an oblique apology to her Facebook page:

Attention was recently drawn to a comment I posted on social media seven years ago. While never intending any malice, this comment was clearly inappropriate. I would like to offer my unreserved apology for this comment.

Next, Johnstone went full denial. Though Johnstone told the Hamilton Spectator she’d definitely “heard of concentration camps,” she also said she “didn’t know what Auschwitz was, or I didn’t up until today.”

OK.
