The Associated Press reports that, during a Friday hearing, Dylann Roof‘s attorney told a federal judge that his client wished to plead guilty. However, since the U.S. government has yet to decide whether to seek the death penalty or life in prison on certain charges, Roof’s lawyers say they were unable to provide him adequate legal counsel. And thus, Roof has plead not guilty on all federal charges.
Those 33 federal charges cover everything from hate crimes to firearm possession, CNN reports. Roof also faces state charges in the Emanuel African Methodist Church shooting, including nine counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder.
