How long do 'Bachelor' and 'Bachelorette' couples actually stay together?

On last night’s Bachelorette season finale, Kaitlyn Bristowe chose Shawn Booth as the winner and gladly accepted his marriage proposal. The happy couple then paid a visit to Jimmy Kimmel Live, where the host poked fun at the Bachelor franchise’s poor track record for forging lasting romances by making them take a tongue-in-cheek pledge to stay together for one year. Bristowe and her fiancé swore on a stack of copies of Us Weekly that, if they’re no longer in a committed relationship as of July 27, 2016, they’ll pay Kimmel $1,000.

That’s a sucker bet.

We crunched the numbers on all past 29 seasons of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette and found that — while female stars fare better than their male counterparts — the couples publicly announce their splits a median length of six months after the season finale airs.
