Is an asteroid ensuring the imminent demise of humanity aimed at the Earth right now?

Some guy in Puerto Rico named Efrain Rodriguez, a self-proclaimed prophet, wrote to NASA in 2010 informing them of an impending asteroid collision, primed to destroy the world. Business as usual, basically. Via Rodriguez:

This asteroid collision is imminent at any time in Puerto Rico. How do you say nothing, when every day of the year, minute after minute, you must monitor all asteroids surrounding planet Earth? You know that you are looking for solutions with systems of atomic weapons available on the planet to deal with an eventual impact. Do not remain silent.

Yahoo! News reported on Monday that NASA finally responded to Rodriquez’s claim.

“NASA knows of no asteroid or comet currently on a collision course with Earth, so the probability of a major collision is quite small.”

“In fact, as best as we can tell, no large object is likely to strike the Earth any time in the next several hundred years.”

So, no imminent end to humanity after all, according to NASA.

Curious as to whether NASA’s statement placated Rodriguez, I called him up on his listed phone number. His sister Maritza answered, telling me Rodriguez was busy setting up his radio show, and he didn’t speak much English anyway. I asked if the asteroid was still scheduled to strike in September — Maritza confirmed it was.

“The asteroid will destroy Earth,” Maritza told me.

Evidently, there’s going to be “four major events” occurring in Israel in September, the last of which — the asteroid — is composed of six sub-events. After it hits Puerto Rico, Maritza says, it will initiate a series of catastrophes.

“The first one, asteroid hits,” Maritza says. “Second, an expansive wave. Third, earthquake about 12 point in Richter scale. Four, Tsunami. Five, three days of darkness. Six, pestilience.”

Sounds fun, I’m stoked.
