Rising R&B star SZA lets her natural hair flow in the new InStyle magazine

In May’s InStyle magazine, with her enviable festoon of curls flowing wildly and sporting eccentrically cool ensembles, alt-R&B sensation SZA looks like the fashion and music harbinger her new wave sound suggests.

Shot by Johan Sandberg, SZA — neé Solana Rowe — discusses her upcoming album release, A, the follow up to last spring’s super successful Z. Creating an ethereal and hypnotic “soundscape,” the effort placed the chanteuse squarely amongst the rebirth of R&B recently re-imagined by Kelela, Tinashe, and Jhene Aiko.

But despite her progressive sound, Rowe insists she won’t be sticking to music solely, telling the magazine, “I won’t be SZA forever. Being an artist is a doorway to other things.”

“Natural black hair icon” could easily be one of those things, her ringlets demanding as much attention and praise as her soulful sound.

But before she steps off the stage, we’ll continue to admire her effortless appeal and groove.

Have a listen to her hit, “Babylon” from her album, Z, below.
