Gallup reports that 42 percent of Americans view the Democratic party favorably, whereas only 35 percent view the Republican party in a favorable light. Yes, that counts as a “favorable edge” over the GOP, but, as Gallup notes, “both parties remain unpopular relative to their historical performance.”
A closer look at the data reveals that, when it comes to both sides of the aisle, more people have an unfavorable view of the parties than a favorable view; 46 percent of Americans view the Democratic party unfavorably, and 53 percent view the Republican party unfavorably.
Will such strong dislike propel any major-party candidate to victory in 2016? I mean, Donald Trump’s “I Took the Night”-esque campaign strategy seems to be paying off with (white, non-Latino) voters at the moment, so who knows.
