1 in 3 women will have an abortion in her lifetime. Today, they tell their stories on Twitter

According to the Guttmacher Institute, one out of every three women in America will terminate a pregnancy in her lifetime, The group Advocates for Youth is bringing attention to this with their “1 in 3 Speaks” campaign. On Thursday, activists, authors, journalists, doctors, artists, comedians, politicians, and others are publicly sharing their abortion stories and encouraging others to do the same on Twitter with the hashtag #1in3Speaks. RH Reality Check is livestreaming the speeches, which will run from 1-9 p.m. ET.

Author Jessica Valenti wrote about her abortion for The Guardian.

People who haven’t had abortions are also showing their support.

I’ve never had an abortion, but I believe women are more important than fetuses, and I’ll never apologize for that. #1in3Speaks

Naturally, pro-lifers aren’t thrilled about #1in3Speaks. Some groups are offering resources to women who are facing ugly backlash for sharing their stories.
