A British man was jailed for trying to smuggle drugs, a cellphone, and a McMuffin into prison

A British man and his girlfriend were sentenced last week for trying to smuggle drugs, a cellphone, a knife, and an Egg McMuffin into a prison.

Karl Jensen, 27, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for the failed smuggling, the BBC reported Monday. His girlfriend, Lisa Mary Hutchinson, 26, who helped in the act, got 12 months of community service.

The couple tried to smuggle a bag of contraband into Wormwood Scrubs prison in London last October. The bag contained marijuana, cocaine, a five-inch blade, a cellphone, a smartwatch, a plastic Kinder Surprise egg containing five SIM cards, a bottle of vodka, and USB chargers. And, yes, a McDonald’s McMuffin.

While prison smuggling in the U.S. has gotten more hi-tech—with drone smuggling becoming more common—it seems that they’re a little behind on the other side of the pond. Jensen tied the package to fishing line that someone lifted up over the prison wall. He was caught in the act on a security camera.

It’s not clear who was lifting the line, and no other arrests have been made in the case. We can assume Jensen will be missing McMuffins while he’s behind bars.
